Breastfeeding Starter Tips For New Moms~

Breastfeeding is a learned process that takes time, patience and dedication yet, the benefits are abundant (more posts on this to come!). Some mothers place the baby to chest, baby finds the breast, latches on and boom they are off. For other mothers this isn’t the case and seeking out quality help from a lactation consultant can be of tremendous help.

When starting to breastfeed, it is important to ensure your environment is calm and you mama feel relaxed to help your milk let down. Trust in your ability to feed your baby and your baby’s ability to take in all the nutrients he or she needs.

Here are a few starter tips/pointers to help you settle into the beautiful journey of breastfeeding:

💟 Gather what you need before starting to try to breastfeed: When we feel prepared we are often less tense. Gather all your essentials to feel comfortable and undisturbed for 30 minutes.

💟Get comfortable and position your baby to feed: Breastfeeding should feel enjoyable and enhances the bond between you and your baby. The baby too should feel good. Don’t force positions as your baby may prefer a slightly different one. Observe and follow his or her cues.

💟Take care of your skin: Remember, breastfeeding should not hurt. Your nipples may be sore for the first week or so but you should not feel pain. You may also notice your nipples/surrounding skin feel and appear dry. Consider investing in a natural nipple salve, as well as, be mindful of adequate hydration (drink to thirst!).

💟 Don’t force it & ask for help as needed: You do not have to go it alone. Seek out quality help from a lactation consultant as needed. This will help to ease any fears, enhance your breastfeeding confidence, and support you in meeting your breastfeeding goals.

Breastmilk is a superfood your babies, is readily available and, is always the right temperature. A mother’s body knows!
